Sun and Vitamin D

Dear Sun, come out!

The sun is dangerous, but also essential for life. For instance, the important vitamin D is only produced when sunlight hits the skin. Studies have shown that UV-B radiation and an optimal vitamin D status can even reduce the risk of developing cancer by up to half. The vitamin suppresses tumor growth and inhibits the formation of metastases. It is also believed to reduce the risk of diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and multiple sclerosis. But the sun offers even more benefits: it strengthens the immune system and stimulates serotonin production in the body. Serotonin is our happiness hormone, which improves our mood. The sun also helps the skin, which is known to all those suffering from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, or acne. Inflammation and itching are alleviated, and sebum production is reduced.

The body regulates itself

Many experts believe that completely avoiding the sun is wrong – but that doesn’t mean we should bathe in the sun without protection for hours. As with everything: the dose makes the poison. To stimulate your own vitamin D production, you don’t need more time than a coffee break outdoors. It is enough to expose your face and arms to the sun for five to twenty minutes. After half an hour in the sun, the body has absorbed enough vitamin D and stops taking it in.
