Elderberry on everyone’s lips
1. Elderflowers – prepare in summer and stock up for winter
Elderflowers are said to have an expectorant and mild diuretic effect . The flowers are used to strengthen the immune system , to increase bronchial mucus in cases of dry coughs, and to induce sweating in cases of feverish colds . Elderflowers are also used externally in the form of compresses for swelling and inflammation .
2. Recipe for elderflower tea
To make one cup of tea, pour three teaspoons of dried elderflower blossoms , stems removed, into 150 ml of boiling water , cover , and let steep for about five minutes . Strain and drink as hot as possible.
One to two cups can be consumed as a preventative measure; in case of illness, one cup can be consumed 3-4 times a day.
3. Home remedies for inhalation
Dried elderflowers can also be used for inhalation . Pour boiling water over 4 tablespoons of flowers . Cover your head with a towel and inhale the vapors for about 10 minutes .
4. Collecting tips
Collect the aromatic elderflowers in the late morning on dry days, as the morning dew evaporates and the active ingredient is at its highest.
Elderflowers lose their taste and effect when it rains, as do they during prolonged periods of heat.
Carefully cut off the umbel. The flower should be open.
Knock out the umbels, shake them off and remove any insects
Do not use plastic, but a basket
Briefly dip the umbels in cold water and drain on kitchen paper
Then dry in the shade.
When the blossoms come off easily and rustle, they’re dry. Only the blossoms are used for tea.
Pour into dark glasses and store in a cool place.
