St. John’s Wort
St. John’s Wort can be used both internally and externally.
- Internal Use: Helps with anxiety, nervousness, and sleep disorders. A balancing effect may be noticed after about two weeks, but full effects take four to six weeks.
- External Use: Effective for joint rheumatism, skin conditions, lumbago, sprains, and dislocations. The affected areas can be massaged with St. John’s Wort oil or treated with oil compresses.
- Homeopathy: Often used for nerve pain following injuries.
- Healing Ointment: Works excellently for coughs (as a chest rub), skin inflammations, and small open wounds.
Ingredients
Recipe for St. John’s Wort Ointment
- Two handfuls of fresh St. John’s Wort flowers (can be combined with calendula flowers)
- 250 g pork fat
- Sterilized screw-top jars
Preparation
- Melt the fat over low heat.
- Add the herbs, let the mixture cool, and leave it overnight.
- Reheat the mixture the next day and strain it into sterilized jars.
- Store in a dark place.
Tip: The best time to prepare ointments is during the waxing moon phase. Use only enamel pots and wooden spoons for preparation.
Shelf Life
Stored in a dark place, the ointment lasts for months.
