Calendula Oil & Salve: Naturally Healing
For minor wounds and injuries, calendula (marigold) salve is a trusted remedy that supports the healing process. Calendula contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it beneficial for circulatory issues, dry, and irritated skin. Depending on location and weather conditions, calendula blooms from June to October.
Ingredients
You can easily make valuable calendula oil and salve at home:
Around 20 calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis)
100 ml high-quality, cold-pressed vegetable oil (e.g., olive oil)
5 g beeswax (for making calendula salve)
Preparation
Calendula Oil
Sterilize a brown glass jar by boiling it in hot water.
Add calendula petals to the clean jar and cover them completely with oil.
Seal the jar and store it in a warm, dark place for 3–4 weeks.
Shake the jar daily to help release the active compounds from the flowers.
After 3–4 weeks, strain the oil using a fine sieve.
Calendula Salve
Melt 5 g of beeswax in a hot water bath.
Stir in 50 g of calendula oil until fully blended.
Pour the mixture into clean containers and let it cool—your calendula salve is ready!
Shelf Life
Stored in a cool, dark place, both calendula oil and salve last for about one year.
Usage
Calendula oil and salve are used for skin injuries and conditions, including:
Skin and mucosal inflammations
Minor wounds
Eczema
Rough, dry skin
For best results, apply calendula oil after showering, as moisture helps the skin absorb it better.
Massage 1–2 drops of oil onto the affected area.
If not applied after a shower, moisten the skin before application or add 1–2 drops of water to the oil and then massage it in.
